Sleep Study

There’s nothing better than going to bed to wind up a hectic day…only to find that your partner begins to snore, keeping you awake.

While some of us may overlook it, for most people, it is not that simple. Snoring, gasping for air during sleep, insomnia, morning headaches & dry mouth, and excessive daytime sleepiness are a few signs that indicate a potentially serious problem that may require your attention. Also, a recent study conducted showed that people with diabetes have more than 50% chances of being diagnosed with sleep apnea which may result in high blood pressure, heart disease or even stroke.

If you can relate to any of the above scenarios, then sleep study is something that you might want to consider.

At Medikart, we perform Level-2, Level-3 & Level-4 sleep study with the help of state-of-the-art sleep diagnostic devices to diagnose conditions like snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, periodic limb movement disorders, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, sleepwalking and other sleep behaviour disorders.

FAQ

A sleep study is a non-invasive and painless procedure. The sleep lab environment we set up at your home (in your bedroom) is dark, quiet and conducive to sleeping. It will take the sleep technician about one hour to set you up. Our sleep technicians usually visit your home around 7 pm and will set everything up. However, the presence of the wires and electrodes occasionally affects the sleep of some patients. Patients with sensitive skin may notice mild skin irritation from sensor adhesives. If you are allergic to adhesive, please let us know in advance of your test.

A sleep study, also called a polysomnogram, is a test that records a patient’s physical state during various stages of sleep and wakefulness. Sleep studies provide data that is essential in evaluating a spectrum of sleep disorders, such as sleep-disordered breathing (also known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), REM behavior disorder, periodic limb movements of sleep, and narcolepsy. More than 50% of diabetics have often some form of OSA.

A Level 1 Sleep study is used to help determine the cause of excessive daytime sleepiness and to diagnose various sleep disorders. A Level 1 study records your brainwaves, heartbeats, and breathing as you sleep. It also charts your eye movements, limb movements, and oxygen in your blood. Level 3 sleep study is conducted in your home. The device provided records your oxygen levels, heart rate, airflow, snoring, and other parameters while you are asleep. Level 4 refers to Sleep Apna Screening with Oximetry, which measures blood oxygen levels; this test may also include measuring heart rate. Level 4 study is also used to test for Pediatric sleep disorders.

Narrowing or obstruction of the airway causes snoring. There are different causes for snoring and treatment needs to be specific to the cause and the particular patient. The particular part of the airway that commonly causes snoring is full of various anatomical parts. There is the tongue, the tonsils, the soft palate, the uvula, and surrounding throat tissue and muscles. Obstructed nasal airways, adenoids, or deformities of the nose could be also causing the problem. A sleep study can be useful to determine causes.

It’s not normal to feel sleepy during the day, to have problems getting to sleep at night, or to wake up not feeling refreshed. So, it is better to undergo a ‘sleep study’ test. Your physician, diabetologist, or pulmonologist may recommend the right sleep study for you.

Nightingales use state-of-the-art machines from both Philips and ResMed. Our most popular machine is the Alice PDx portable diagnostic recording device that is intended for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) screening and follow-up diagnostics.

Our sleep technician once again visits your home in the morning after you have woken up. He will take the device back. The sleep study results can be emailed to you and your treating doctor. Our sleep technicians will not diagnose or recommend the right course of treatment. As soon as your study is completed you should schedule a follow-up visit with the doctor who referred you. If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea you will most likely be asked to use some PAP (positive airway pressure) therapy using specialized machines called constant positive airway pressure (CPAPs). Sometimes, a bi-level positive airway pressure machine (Bi-PAPs) may be also prescribed. These machines use air pressure to `splint’ open your airway while you are sleeping to prevent the airway restrictions that lead to decreased oxygen levels associated with sleep apnea. Once your doctor recommends the right machine, you can buy/rent the same from Nightingales.

If you think you are a candidate for a sleep study or have been prescribed one by your treating doctor, please call us at +91 9811957360. Our sleep studies start from INR 4000 onwards/.
