CPAP Therapy
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is a treatment for people suffering from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can induce breathing problems and CPAP machines use mild air pressure to keep the airways open and make sure the airways don’t collapse. CPAP therapy includes a CPAP machine which includes a mask that covers your nose or mouth, a tube that connects to the machine’s monitor, and a motor that blows air into the tube.
BiPAP Therapy
Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) therapy is also a treatment for people suffering from sleep apnea. The main difference between CPAP therapy and BiPAP therapy is that a CPAP machine provides continuous air pressure whereas a BiPAP machine provides varying pressure. BiPAP therapy’s varying pressure is helpful for people who find it difficult to exhale against CPAPs continuous pressure. Most of a BiPAP machine is similar to CPAP machine like it also needs a mask and a tube connecting to the device. There are 2 kinds of pressure in a BiPAP machine:
- Inspiratory positive airway pressure (IPAP) – This is the pressure that the machine provides when you inhale. The BiPAP machine provides higher IPAP than the CPAP.
- Expiratory positive airway pressure (EPAP) – This is the pressure that the machine provides when you exhale. The BiPAP machine offers a lower EPAP than CPAP..
Automatic CPAP machine
Automatic titrating (measuring and adjusting) continuous positive airway pressure is almost like a CPAP machine but its set within a high and low-pressure range for the purpose of varying inhalation needs. With each breath you take, a built-in algorithm in the automatic CPAP machine determines how much pressure is required for inhalation. Your pressure needs may change throughout the night, hour, or minute of sleep, according to this hypothesis. There are numerous instances in which this could be the case. A good example is the position of sleeping
How does a CPAP machine work?
The compressor (motor) of a CPAP machine produces a constant stream of pressured air that passes through an air filter and into a flexible tube. This tube pushes clean air into a mask that fits over your nose or mouth.
The airstream from the CPAP machine pushes against any obstructions in your airways while you sleep, allowing ample of oxygen to reach your lungs.
Your breathing does not pause since there is nothing blocking the flow of oxygen. As a result, you don’t have to wake up every time you want to continue breathing.
CPAP masks
The CPAP mask is an important part of your CPAP therapy which delivers air from the CPAP machine to your nose and mouth. As you might expect, your CPAP mask should be as comfortable as possible while also providing a complete seal around your nose and/or mouth (without leaving marks on your face or irritating your skin). CPAP masks and headgear exist in a variety of forms and sizes. Because everyone’s demands, preferences, and facial shapes are different, you may need to test a few different mask styles before settling on one that works best for you.
There are different types of masks available in the market for people who are diagnosed with sleep apnea. There are three main types of CPAP masks, and they’re generally available in all sizes:
- Full Face masks – These masks cover both your nose and your mouth
- Nasal masks – These masks fit over your nose only, offering a lighter fit than full face masksa
- Nasal pillow masks – These masks are even more lightweight and minimal than nasal masks, offering a high level of openness and visibility.
